Facing Failure

I am afraid to fail. Putting those words on the page feels like some grand confession, but I don’t think I’m the only person who experiences this fear. Maybe not everyone is trying to write interesting blog posts and gain an audience right now, but at some point most of us come up against the specter of failure. It is especially visceral when we are outside of our comfort zones and attempting something new, something important to us. Lately I’ve been confronting this fear, and I’m teaching myself a new perspective on failure.

Outracing the Inner Critic

I am a master at getting in my own way. I can trip myself up before I even realize I’m going somewhere. And it turns out that getting out of your own way can be pretty tricky. It’s almost impossible to think your way out of being stuck inside your own head, but that is always my first response. So how do we stop over-thinking and get out of our own way? 1/11: Eleventyone Launch Party

Welcome to Eleventyone, my new home on the internet. I’ve set myself the task of writing 111 posts this year and I invite you to come along for the ride. I’m hoping that my efforts to motivate myself might serve to help you do your thing as well. I’ve got some good stuff lined up already for the next few weeks, but today’s entry will be short. I just want to say: Welcome to Eleventyone, let’s party! Here’s to creative self expression. Also, free hugs this weekend!!!

1. There’s a little bit of poetry in it. Say it out loud: eleventyone. It’s got a nice rhythm to it, a rise and a fall. Like the sound of tires on the open road, or maybe a train in the distance. Eleventyone eleventyone eleventyone. Everybody loves the sound of a train in the distance. I can hear it in the sing-song style of a child’s game and also as a battle cry. Then again, it’s been looping in my head for longer than is probably good for me.

The Pitfalls of Perfection

I always thought that perfectionism was the inability to complete something because you got lost tinkering with the details in an attempt to get everything perfect, even when certain elements or perhaps the entire project were not all that vital. And this is certainly a part of perfectionism: a tendency to get hung up counting the leaves on the trees even if the forest is burning. Missing deadlines because you were off searching for that perfect word, or maybe spending hours weighing the benefits of various font choices. What about all italics?
